You have nothing to wear or have no time to decide what shoes match your violet sweater? There is one right solution to this problem – wear black! Black dress is an essential attribute of an elegant, well-dressed woman’s wardrobe. This year’s spring collections are full of black color, mixed with navy-blue, cream, silver and classic white.
You can create your own ensembles or dress in black from head to toe. But pay attention to choosing right accessories! Pearls, silver tribal bangles, golden sandals, red handbags and gloves will make a nice combination with your black outfit. Metallic or bronze bag will also help you look fresh and modern. It is one of the hottest accessory of the season and will add instant glamour to your appearance.
Surely, classic and practical black color has never gone away, but this time is has been featured in almost every collection on the international catwalks.
Nicolas Ghesquière at Balenciaga mixed black with navy and white, Phoebe Philo at Chloé had black frilled tops, slouch-trousers and slip dresses, all interspersed with white and pastels. Black was a favourite of avant-garde Dutch duo Viktor & Rolf, Narciso Rodriguez, Calvin Klein and Donna Karan, where it was used in a figure-enhancing mix of opaque and sheer stretch. Alber Elbaz at Lanvin’s show featured beautifully cut trenchcoats, suits, little dresses, one-shoulder gowns and glorious, belted, short robe-coats – all in black. Giorgio Armani had black Manchu-style trouser suits and slinky, cutaway "red carpet" gowns. Rei Kawakubo at Comme des Garcons presented black ballerina-tutus over black trousers. London duo Boudicca underscored the importance of black by showing their strict black and white tailoring on a coal-black gravel catwalk.
"So many women come in looking for a bright evening dress and walk out with black," Joan Burstein, founder of Browns boutique in London, told Telegraph.co.uk. "Colour is marvellous, but some days, it can defeat you. My favourite black? Jil Sander trousers and a cashmere sweater. I accessorise with pearls, or a red handbag and gloves."
One more reason to choose black attire – its slimming and flattering effect.
"Black is an easy option when I wake up and don't know what to put on," says Bridget Cosgrave, womenswear fashion director for Matches. "It's time for a black revival. I have black cashmere sweaters in every shape for fat and slim days. Chloé black trousers do wonders for my body. I'd put black with navy or cream, and a pair of gold sandals, to give it a nautical twist."
"It used to be a uniform; now, black is about expressing shape and structure without being in-your-face," says Susanne Tide-Frater, creative director of Harrods. "Black is all about elegance. I have three or four favourite black trousers from Miu Miu, Hussein Chalayan and Balenciaga. I'll put them with a Lanvin jacket to create a suit look, then add silver shoes, an antique silver bag and all those tribal accessories in bone and metal."
