Donna Faske was born in 1948 in Queens, New-York to a showroom model mother and a tailor father, even her step-father was a practicing suit maker; it was almost inevitable that young Karan would go on to study fashion at New-York's Parsons school of design.

While attending design school, Karan was offered a job at designer Anne Klein. Her apprenticeship as designer was a successful one as in 1969 Karan was named as the successor to Klein, and by 1974, following Klein's death she was made head of the company and remained in this position until 1984 when Karan left to launch her own label with her husband. In 1985 "Donna Karan New-York" was founded; focusing on her concept of "seven easy pieces" with her wraparound skirt & the classic Donna karan item - the black bodysuit. In 1988 she introduced her "DKNY" collection, a younger line which has become the backbone of the entire company.

Donna Karan is known to support the needs of modern women: "I never see one woman when I design; it's a universe of women. Clothes are a canvas to their individuality". Karan prides herself on making durable, wearable designs inspired by the lively & frantic everyday life in New-York.

Donna Karan, a true New-Yorker at heart with her professionalism, character and tenacity; pioneered a new attitude towards dressing; her successful labels "Donna Karan" & "DKNY" are two major fashion powerhouses and Donna Karan herself, a highly esteemed designer is also known as one of the fashion world's leading top designers.
